Who We Are

Essential Engineering is a full service MEP/FP consulting firm based out of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. We specialize in designing and investigating building systems for new and retrofit projects serving the life science, university, manufacturing, industrial, pharmaceutical (cGMP) and bio-tech industries.

Our Approach

From conception to completion, all of our projects have daily oversight from senior level project engineers and designers. Since they are engaged in all aspects of the project, our principals and senior engineers will be found both on site at the owner’s meeting and performing work in the field. We recognize that fast paced environments and schedules often require immediate resolution from the design team. This approach allows us to be extremely reactive and responsive to our clients' needs.

On every project, we take the time to verify as-built drawings by performing the existing conditions field survey work necessary to complete the design. We never take as-built drawings at face value. When the design requires connecting to an existing system we will review prior documentation including drawings, equipment schedules, and submittals. We also measure the operating performance of the primary equipment and distribution to verify sufficient capacity for the new loads and to determine the new operating performance characteristics of the system. Some examples of systems profiled during the design phase include air handling units, exhaust fans, ductwork distribution, pumps, heat exchangers, and piping distribution.

In our experience, this approach leads to a better coordinated and more streamlined construction schedule and reduces the amount of construction change orders associated with unforeseen field conditions which saves the owner valuable time and money.

All of the equipment, systems, and system components on our projects are engineered and specified in the contract documents. We do not rely on vendors to provide major equipment selections such as custom air handling units or packaged pump skids. We believe there is real value added (both operational and constructable) to the owner when the equipment and components are specifically engineered and designed to match the loads of the system.

We take the same approach to investigating ineffective systems. When necessary, we will measure and profile your existing systems to isolate and define the problem. This work often leads to providing design documentation to remediate the operational issue(s) found in the field.

At Essential Engineering we believe in serving the needs of our clients and in the values of integrity and hard work. We have found the reward for this is the continued opportunity to do more hard work.
